Kans was known for his greed and cruelty towards his subjects. After his sister Devaki got married to Vasudev, a prophetic voice from above announced that the 8th son born to Vasudev and Devaki would put Kans’ tyranny to an end. Kans was enraged, and he imprisoned the newlyweds. Kans went on to kill 7 of Devaki’s children. When Devaki gave birth to her 8th son, the prophetic voice returned and told Devaki to take the child across the Yamuna to Gokul and exchange him Nand and Yashoda’s newly born daughter. Vasudev looked down to realize to see his hands unchained. Vasudev did everything as instructed by the prophetic voice. Throughout his journey, his newborn son protected Vasudev from every disaster as Lord Krishna was an avatar of Lord Vishnu. Vasudev then realized that his child was a divine being. At Nand’s house, Vasudev replaced his son with Yashoda’s daughter and returned to prison.

When Kans tried to harm the daughter, Goddess Durga appeared and said that the 8th child has been born and will fulfill his prophecy. The child raised by Yashoda, Krishna, went on to kill Kans. And thus, every year, we celebrate Krishna Janmashtami to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna
