UPSC Prelims 2020 Exam postponed amid COVID-19 Lockdown | Huge Relief for Aspirants
As the country is under huge stress due to the COVID-19 lockdown, there was a sense of confusion among UPSC aspirants regarding the conduct of the preliminary exam. Before the COVID-19 situation, the exam was scheduled to be conducted on the 31st of May of 2020. But, as the situation is not witnessing any significant improvement, the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) has decided to postpone the scheduled UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Exam. It is an in-principle decision and an official announcement will be made after 3rd May.

What is the new Tentative Date for the Exam?
There is a huge discrepancy regarding the conduct of the exam and till now it is highly unlikely that the UPSC Prelims will be conducted till the end of July. UPSC CSE is one of the toughest exams which has a huge aspirant base. Lakhs of students sit in its Preliminary exam every year and seeing the COVID-19 situation, it’s like playing with fire if this exam is conducted in a hurry. Can UPSC conduct Prelims 2020 in online mode?
UPSC Prelims is not a state based on the board-based exam. So, the conduct of this exam in online mode is not an easy task. Moreover, an exam like this can not be conducted in multiple sessions as it has its own set of problems.
Also, the requirement for IT centers for this exam will be very huge due to a huge aspirant base.
Multiple session exams are conducted in batches wherein the total number of aspirants taking the exam is divided into groups, who take the exam in different time slots.
Moreover, the question paper is different for each slot but the difficulty level remains the same. Exams like JEE Mains conducted by NTA and BITSAT are conducted in the same manner.
This online conduct looks very simple but the exam as competitive as UPSC Prelims, the online mode will pose many problems. UPSC doesn’t have the bandwidth for conducting an exam for a Million aspirants. Students can easily argue that the exam of set A was easier than that of set B. Hence, the exam conducting body will get in trouble.
Can a Tab-based Exam be a solution?
A tab-based exam looks very promising and UPSC is gradually progressing towards an online-based exam but adopting this strategy simultaneously is will pose many problems.
And, if we talk about a wireless tab-based exam, then it will require highly efficient technological architecture to conduct a secure exam.
Conducting a wireless exam for a million aspirants will require a very efficient lab set-up for computers and power supply raising the cost of conducting the exam.
Moreover, you should keep in mind that wireless devices like tab can be easily tapped. So, we need to develop a highly secure architecture for the conduct of a tab-based exam.
